Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients because they perform hundreds of tasks in the body. Vitamins are nutrients that our body needs to function and control disease. Our body cannot produce vitamins on its own, so we need to get them from the diet we eat or, in the latter case, from nutritional supplements. There are 13 vitamins that are essential for the proper functioning of our body. Knowing the different types of vitamins and understanding their purpose is important for good health. Vitamins and minerals are used in our body in different ways. Although vitamins do not directly serve as a source of energy, they help enzymes that produce energy from nutrients such as sugars and fats. There are two types of vitamins: fat soluble and water soluble. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in our fat cells and therefore require fat absorption. Water-soluble vitamins are not stored in our body; therefore, we must supplement them every day. Our body takes them from the food we eat. It then absorbs the amount it needs and then eliminates the residue that is not needed as waste.
